This UVic Libraries Digital Scholarship Commons workshop series being offered in the Fall of 2025 starting on Friday, September 12th is an introduction to digital design and maker skills so that you can create devices to solve problems in the world around you – Bring your ideas to life by exploring ideas, questions, problems, and potential solutions to solve a personal problem, or start an entrepreneurial venture.

In this hands-on 6-part workshop series, participants will use the Design Thinking process to identify problems, create possible solutions, develop a maker mindset, and learn technical skills that are useful in safely creating physical prototypes. Learners will receive training to achieve competency at an introductory level for skills including:

  • 3D Design & 3D Printing
  • Laser Cutting & 3D Design
  • Electronics (Arduino & Internet of Things) & Soldering,
  • WordPress Website Creation
  • Design Thinking methodology

We encourage everyone to attend all workshops in the series in person, but realize that not everyone’s schedules will allow this, so the activities for each topic will be made available for people to work through on their own as their schedule allows (except for the Arduino & Internet of Things workshops that require participants to use electronics kits in the library).
